Margo Gianos: CEO, Honestly Margo

My NativeAdVice:

Bio:

Margo Gianos is the Teen CEO of Honestly Margo. With her mom, Irene, Margo launched Honestly Margo in 2013 with the introduction of a product she developed in the kitchen of her home. Since the launch of the brand, Margo has actively marketed the brand and positioned it in more than 400 markets throughout the United States. In addition to running a growing bath and beauty brand, Margo is a high school student, entering her senior year, participates in school sports, and is an active member of her church.  When she's not hanging out with friends, she loves to come up with fun and unique products to bring to the marketplace.

How did you get into the industry?

Honestly Margo began after many attempts and relentless drive to start a business by a young girl.   The entrepreneurial spirit of Margo led her to create a lip balm that was the start of this company.   From there, we grew adding products and lines that complimented them, products that were fun, unique and fresh.

Any emerging industry trends?

We see lots of interest in things that are natural and good for you.  Another thing we really are seeing are old things making a comeback.  Everything old is new again.

Any industry opportunities or challenges?

The beauty industry is constantly evolving and it’s important for brands to continually expand their lines and innovate. We see this as both a challenge and an opportunity as we love bringing new products to market and providing our customers with quality, good-for-you beauty options.

Inspiration for the business idea, and your vision for the Business?

Margo always had a desire to start a business, and because she had an interest in beauty, she came up with the idea to make lip balm. After many attempts at coming up with a great formula, her creation was a hit.  Our vision for the future of Honestly Margo is to be a globally recognized bath and beauty brand.

What's next for the Business in the near future?

Honestly Margo is always coming up with fresh, new, fun, and unique products.  Innovative products that are relevant and fresh are always on the horizon.

Your key initiatives for the success of the Business?

Our key initiatives are to continue to build the Honestly Margo brand by expanding our retail partnerships and bringing new, innovative products to the beauty market.

Your most difficult moment at the Business? (and what did you learn?)

One of our biggest challenges has been Margo’s age and people taking her seriously, especially in the early stages of our business.  People would think how cute this was, and still to this day, think it’s a “cute little lip balm business.”  Because of that, she heard no over and over and over.  But our persistence pushing through the no’s led us to the point where we are now, 5 years in business, growing a global bath and beauty brand.

Ideal experience for a customer/client?

We love hearing how customers love our products and the difference it’s made in their lives.  People tell us how the Serenity Vapor Balm has helped with headaches, stress, nausea, even dementia!  We want our products to be products our customers have as their go-to must-haves in their beauty bags, in the bathrooms, in their purse.

How do you motivate others?

We hope others hear our story and are inspired by it.  Knowing that building something from nothing is very possible and doing so even at a young age.  We hope we inspire other women to support one another, to lift each other up, to remove envy and jealousy, and to cheer each other on to have successes and victories.  We hope people see Honestly Margo and know that behind our awesome products lies an even more awesome story.

Career advice to those in your industry?

For anyone starting out in their career, I’d tell them to persevere, have confidence in themselves and always be open to learn from others who have been successful.  Know that success doesn’t happen overnight and continue to be persistent, despite challenges, obstacles, hurdles, and hearing NO.
