Katherine Fleischman: Founder, Blink PR

My NativeAdVice:

Katherine Fleischman 's company Blink PR, first blossomed from a passion for the fields of public relations, fashion, and the arts. Katherine graduated from the University of Michigan with a focus on Art History and Psychology, Spending her summers at Teen Vogue Magazine, Katherine assisted editors in the fashion closet and realized she had truly found her niche in the heart of Manhattan’s fashion world. With a Masters degree in Public Relations from New York University, Katherine worked in the advertising industry and dabbled as a freelancer at several PR agencies. her clientele range from fashion designers to artists. The common thread that drives the philosophy is that it breeds and supports talent in the fashion and lifestyle sectors.

How did you get into the industry?

I have always been a natural networker and so I started attending many events- PR is all about connecting people and making things happen. Once I started immersing myself in fashion events, it was easier to meet potential clients as well as the media, stylists and celebrities and influencers I needed to grow my network and help clients grow as well in their fields.

Any emerging industry trends?

Many PR people are using new online tools to track press, connect with media and also to use social and digital media apps an analysis trackers to better improve their PR campaigns. Gone are the days when people are picking up magazines to buy. These days, a true PR person will measure success with online and digital hits on high ranking sites and researching influencers with high social media following.

Any industry opportunities or challenges?

A lot of my clients with products are seeing a need to use their own tools of social media to further increase new business developments and announcements and are attracted to a more direct to consumer model such as sales at tradeshows, trunk shows and events. The challenges in using social media and investing in events is that they don’t have the proper traction or audience to actually turn their time, work and energy into valuable leads.

Inspiration for the business idea, and your vision for the Business?

What inspired me was the brands or products that would approach me with a phenomenal idea in the market but with no eyeballs or awareness coming to it. One of my first two products are now a king in their niche and they solved a very simple problem. I love products that help people and give back, and I am passionate about helping them find ways to be exposed.

What's next for the Business in the near future?

We are planning on expanding digitally to different markets using more of a consultant/freelancer vs. employee model. These days, the work can get done from everywhere. I would love to have different representatives in different areas of the US that are stellar in the field of PR.

Your key initiatives for the success of the Business?

I have partnered with a company that does online flash sales as well as with a photographer, SEO, graphic design and website guru in order to effectively deliver more services as well as trustworthy work to the client that needs it all in terms of developing their brand from the ground up.

Your most difficult moment at the Business? (and what did you learn?)

My most difficult moment was losing many employees all at once due to travel, changes in personal life etc. Delegating work has always been difficult for me and letting that go is the best part of being a great manager. Handing over the trust to someone who you can really groom to be an effective and valuable asset to your team.

Ideal experience for a customer/client?

Anyone that gives back to charity somehow, while also solving a problem and being a leader in their niche, with a reasonable long term budget and business plan.

How do you motivate others?

I always encourage my employees to attend and network like I did when I first started my own business, and also attend PR related speaking engagements and mixers.

Career advice to those in your industry?

Don’t let anything stop you. The mind is something that is bigger than we imagine and if you just use it and have the drive and passion to do what you want, there is no stopping you.
