Lee Crutchley: THE NOCTURNAL JOURNAL: A Late--Night Exploration of What’s Really On Your Mind

Lee Crutchley is an artist and author whose previous books include The Art of Getting Started and How to Be Happy (or at Least Less Sad). He enjoys the weird and wonderful ideas he has when he should be sleeping.

At one point or another we all find ourselves laying wide awake at night. Sometimes we’re so full of angst and worries we can’t switch off at night, or we’re haunted by dark or crazy thoughts that always seem much more realistic at 2:00 AM, or our creative minds keep pumping out idea after idea and won’t let you nod off. No matter what is causing your lack of sleep, it almost always stems from the same reason: our days are busier and busier, our worries get pushed aside, our feelings stay unexplored, and our creative ideas remain itches that we don’t have time to scratch. Under the cover of darkness and in the privacy of the bedroom, we’re free to think and feel what we often keep suppressed during the day.

Artist Lee Crutchley believes that night is the perfect time to explore all of these thoughts. In this creative antidote to those restless hours, THE NOCTURNAL JOURNAL: A Late--Night Exploration of What’s Really On Your Mind, Crutchley guides readers through the inner workings of their minds with hand-lettered, illustrated prompts and exercises, such as:

•    Fill this box with all of your worries. Now sort them into these boxes: Productive Worries versus Unproductive Worries.

•    Write a resume that consists only of your failures and rejections. Which of these are still holding you back?

•    What are your three main problems right now? Invent things to fix each of them (don’t worry about the science).

•    Write down every amazing idea you have tonight. Tomorrow, highlight the ideas that are still amazing.

THE NOCTURNAL JOURNAL helps readers live with greater freedom and introspection, providing a safe place to reconnect with the most important, and often most neglected, aspects of self. An engaging, supportive, and emotionally aware resource for night owls and insomniacs, this journal teases out the pressing thoughts, deep questions, everyday anxieties, and half-formed creative ideas that need unpacking, bringing more peace of mind and a richer understanding of ourselves.
