Foster Provost: Data Science for Business

Foster Provost is Professor of Data Science, Professor of Information Systems, Andre Meyer Faculty Fellow, and former Director of the Center for Data Science at New York University.  He previously was Editor-in-Chief of the journal Machine Learning and was elected as a founding board member of the International Machine Learning Society.  Foster stands out in data science for having made substantial contributions across research, business thought leadership, and practical applications. For more than 25 years, Foster Provost has helped leaders in business and government understand how data science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning technologies can add value.  He has designed AI/machine learning systems for the largest companies in the world, and he also has designed the founding data science architectures for several successful startups.  He has built multiple award-winning data science teams.  His writing is used widely across the top universities to train data science and business professionals, and his research is read broadly and has won many awards, including (among others) the 2017 European Research Paper of the Year, Best Paper awards in the top research venues across three decades, the 2009 INFORMS Design Science Award from the top professional society for operations research and analytics, IBM Faculty Awards, and a President’s Award from NYNEX Science and Technology (now Verizon).

With their book Data Science for Business, Foster and his coauthor Tom Fawcett have helped the business and technical world to move beyond the technical details of data science, to understand the fundamental principles. Without understanding the fundamentals, organizations and their leaders have a difficult time realizing the value of the technologies. These fundamentals include the processes of conducting data science operations, the principles underlying “machine learning”, but also the qualitative differences between data science projects and many other projects, notions such as the benefits of treating data as an asset, and the considerations necessary to attract and retain top-notch data science professionals.

"Data Science for Business also addresses fundamental concepts that are decidedly non-algorithmic, like the advantages of treating data as an asset, frameworks for translating business problems into data science solutions, sustaining competitive advantage with data science, and strategies for building and nurturing data science teams."

It is listed as required reading by Fortune and Harvard University, is already being used as a textbook by over 150 universities in 26 countries around the world, in a wide variety of programs, including MBA, MS in Business Analytics, MS in Data Science, Business Undergraduate, Executive Education, and Arts & Science Undergraduate. Data Science for Business by Foster Provost and Tom Fawcett is intended for those who need to understand data science/data mining, and those who want to develop their skill at data-analytic thinking. Data Science for Business is not a book about algorithms.  Instead it presents a set of fundamental principles for extracting useful knowledge from data.  These fundamental principles are the foundation for many algorithms and techniques for data mining, but also underlie the processes and methods for approaching business problems data-analytically, evaluating particular data science solutions, and evaluating general data science plans.

"A must-read resource for anyone who is serious about embracing the opportunity of big data.” — Craig Vaughan, Global Vice President, SAP

“There is no other book on practical data science for business applications that simultaneously has as much authority and as much clarity. Students cannot stop raving about this book.” — Prof. Sinan Aral, MIT Sloan School of Business
