Richie Cardona: General Manager of Cantina Rooftop

27-year old Richie Cardona was raised in Long Island by his beloved, Salvadorian parents. Cardona’s start in the hospitality industry can be traced back to his childhood, influenced by his Celebrity Chef, father.  Following in his father's footsteps, Cardona began his flourishing career in the restaurant industry at an early age.  The restaurant that got his foot in the door was Calle Ocho. From there, Cardona went on to earn a degree in Accounting.  After gaining operations experience from his post-grad work at an accounting firm, Richie Cardona decided to get back to his roots. He made the decision to pursue a hospitality degree. At the young age of 21, Cardona was already working as the General Manager at Hudson River Café in Harlem.  Cardona also played a major role in his father’s renowned catering business: Cardona Catering. The family business boomed with Richie's help and gained celebrity clients including Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Preston Bailey, the New York Yankees and the New York Knicks.  Soon after, Richie and a close friend opened a high-profile event group called Lifestyle Event Group.  This success in the event production world made complete sense if one is acquainted it to Richie’s personality.  Ever since High School, Richie Cardona was the man with the plan. He was typically the leader of the pack amongst his group of friends because he harvested the knowledge of neighborhood hot spots and providing a wow experience.

After dabbling in the event planning industry, Richie went on to become the General Manager at Sazon in Tribeca. He raised gross sales at the restaurant exponentially in just a year's time.  At the same time, he also aided in the opening of Sombrero. It’s hard to believe that someone of 27 years of age already accomplished so much, but the list doesn’t stop there. Now, as the General Manager of new hot-spot, Cantina Rooftop, Cardona is striving to take the restaurant and lounge to a whole new level of prosperity. Richie’s plans for the new rooftop include an innovative new brunch experience, delivery service, year-round rooftop dining in addition to mixology and guacamole making classes. Some advice from Cardona: “Never to give up. Always follow your gut. And know that you get to live another day.”  For Richie Cardona, the sky's the limit.

Megan Gunderson: Winemaker at WALT

Bio:

WALT Winemaker Megan Gunderson began her career in the Napa Valley in 2001 when she moved from Colorado to California and worked as an intern at the Robert Mondavi Winery in Oakville. While working at Mondavi, she discovered a real passion for wine and viticulture. She went on to become a Laboratory Manager for St. Supery Vineyards in Rutherford and Dominus Estates in Oakville. At Dominus, she was able to refine her winemaking skills under the mentorship of Christian Moueix and Jean-Claude Berrouet. Her degrees in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics give her a unique perspective into the scientific aspects of winemaking. Megan has made several trips to France to study wine-making techniques, the most recent to Burgundy in the summer of 2011.

Megan joined the relatively new HALL winery in June of 2005 as an Enologist. HALL had just unveiled a state-of-the-art winery in the hills near Rutherford, dedicated to producing single vineyard and limited production Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc. In the fall of 2007, Megan assumed the role of Assistant Winemaker for HALL. Why did you start your own business?

My clients and friends encouraged me to start TRUE to bring more professional, well-educated and caring models into the fashion industry.

You Control Your Own Destiny: One reason to own a small business is the ability to direct the culture of your company.   When you're in the driver's seat, you are making the decisions on how best to steer your company into the future. This might be overwhelming for some and one must know when and how best to delegate. However, when you are able to make your own decisions about how best to operate day-to-day, this leads to creating a culture, a brand and an organization like we have at TRUE.

Did you experience a pivotal moment on your way to success?

It was a pivotal moment when we moved into our first office on 7th Avenue/Fashion Avenue in New York City and when TRUE won Full Figured Fashion Agency of the year..

What’s the best small business advice you ever gave and/or received?

Be Resilient, Be Optimistic and Be Fearless

Entrepreneurs are likely to face many hard choices in the process of getting a business off the ground. When you encounter obstacles, having these qualities - resilience, optimism and courage - are key.

What’s one “best practice” more entrepreneurs should be embracing?

Hire the Right People: Hiring the right people is crucial to building a thriving business.  People are truly the backbone of any successful company, and I credit my success to my teams. As President of TRUE, I've opted for a hands-on approach to the hiring process to ensure we hire the best.

Do you have a small business prediction for 2015?

Small Business Revival: There's going to be a revival in small business start ups as more Americans get back to their entrepreneurial spirit. They are going to embrace owning their own business because it offers freedom and opportunity to help others and to create their own wealth.

What’s your favorite book?

The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference

Book by Malcolm Gladwell

Is there a quote you find particularly inspiring?

“Be the change you wish to see in the world.”
