Bio:

Ashley Paskill is a recent graduate of Temple University's Bachelor of Arts in journalism program. She received her Associate's degree in music from Montgomery County Community College. Ashley is currently an editorial intern with Society19 and a social media/marketing intern with Hulluh!Designs. In her free time, she assists with her church's website, sings in the church choir, and is on her church's Consistory (leadership board). She also enjoys doing crafts."

What do I do best?

I am a writer and journalist. I have always been good with writing.

What makes me the best version of myself?

I am a creative person. I love doing creative things, such as writing and doing crafts. Being creative has given me an edge in journalism to help come up with article ideas and word things in unique ways.

What are my aspirations?

Personally, I hope that I can be the best Christian I can be and to have Jesus shine through me in everything I do. Professionally, I hope to be a music journalist/writer at Rolling Stone magazine.

My Biggest Success?

My biggest accomplishment to date is graduating Cum Laude from Temple University with my Bachelor’s in Journalism!

My Most Challenging Moment?

My most challenging moment was making my first journalism mistake while at my internship. I have learned that these things happen to the best journalists and that the little things won’t end my career!

My Motto?

My motto is “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”

My Favorite People/Role Models?

Personally, my biggest role model is my mom. She’s one of the strongest women I know. Professionally, my biggest role model is Lori Tharps. She was one of my favorite professors and has done basically everything I want to do in my career.

My Favorite Places/Destinations?

I have such a massive spot in my heart for New York City. I eventually want to live and work there. I sob like a baby every time I visit and have to leave.

My Favorite Products/Objects?

I literally cannot function without my physical planner and my iPod. If a task doesn’t get written in my planner, it doesn’t get done. I need my music, and my iPod has so many apps that I need.

My Current Passions?

I have been helping Hulluh!Designs, a startup boot wrap and liner company, with their marketing. I am also discovering a ton of new music and musicians, which is always a blast!

My NativeAdVice:

How did you get into the industry?

I got into journalism after receiving my Associate’s in music and deciding that I wanted to get my Bachelor’s in something different. Originally I was going to do music therapy, but God had another plan for my life.  I had always loved to write and my friends would say how great I’d be at journalism, so I decided to combine my loves of music and journalism to pursue music journalism.

Any emerging industry trends?

There are so many online magazines and websites that are content-driven. There are even positions that are specifically geared towards writing for the web. Many websites are competing for views and SEO is constantly changing.

Any industry opportunities or challenges?

While there are a lot of digital opportunities for jobs, journalism is still super competitive and there are fewer jobs available, especially for recent grads such as myself. Graduates are expected to have a wide variety of skills, such as video production and audio editing, even if they only want to be a writer. While having these skills makes us more marketable and opens us to various opportunities, we are unable to hone the skills in our desired position.

Inspiration for the business idea, and your vision for the Business?

Like I mentioned before, I have always loved to write and I love music, so I would love to be a music and/or entertainment journalist at a magazine. I’m hoping to be a writer at a magazine in New York City. My ultimate goal is Rolling Stone magazine!

What's next for the Business in the near future?

I’m currently doing an internship with Society19 to help me build my portfolio. I’m also using skills that I acquired through journalism to help a startup with some marketing. I’m definitely looking for a full-time job at a publication, especially at a magazine.

Your key initiatives for the success of the Business?

I’ve had a lot of success using Shapr for networking and for finding sources for articles.

Your most difficult moment at the Business? (and what did you learn?)

My most difficult moment in journalism so far was when I made my first mistake in something I published. I learned that nobody is perfect, but I need to triple check to make sure everything is correct before sending it to an editor.

Ideal experience for a customer/client?

I hope that I can provide quality work to all of my editors so that information about new music can be disseminated quickly yet correctly. I want my readers to be informed about the latest musicians and the causes they support to help them stay up-to-date on music trends allow them to be uplifted by music like I have been.  

How do you motivate others?

I try to maintain a calm and positive attitude, even in the most stressful circumstances, to help everyone else stay positive and to get things done.

Career advice to those in your industry?

Don’t give up! It can be daunting to not break into journalism right away, but network as much as possible and do not be afraid to take unpaid internships to help get your foot in the door.
