Alli Hoff Kosik: Writer

My NativeAdVantage:

In September 2016, Alli Hoff Kosik walked away from her dream job to pursue her love of writing professionally, with only a few contacts and a general idea of how to make that happen. Today, she is a full-time freelance writer. Her work has appeared in Marie Claire and on a variety of Web sites including Real Simple, Racked, Bustle, Brit + Co, Refinery29, Ravishly, and The Kitchn. You can also find Alli blogging at She is passionate about reading, running, rainbow sprinkles, her lipstick collection, watching embarrassing reality TV, and wandering her neighborhood listening to podcasts. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and (in her dreams, at least) three golden retriever puppies.

What do I do best?

I take a lot of pride in my ability to make other people feel understood and good about themselves. I love welcoming people into my home, giving advice, and building up their dreams to make them feel doable. I like to think that this skill has translated into my writing, allowing me to understand what readers are looking for and what will make them feel seen wherever they are.

What makes me the best version of myself?

Having a good sense of humor has allowed me to take optimism — which hasn’t always been an easy frame of mind for me! — a step further. For me, having an attitude of “Everything will be fine in the end!” isn’t necessarily enough to keep me focused when I hit the lowest of low points… but looking for opportunities to laugh and find irony in situations can often offer that extra push and give me the boost I need to regain momentum, even when it’s the last thing I feel like doing.

What are my aspirations?

I think that many of us have learned the hard way that there’s really no such thing as true work/life balance. Instead, what I aspire to is a life in which I’m simultaneously fully engaged in the things that matter to me personally and working intensely and creatively on work that means something to me, too — and doing both of those things around the clock!

Specifically, I aspire to writing a book and to one day building a loving family life with my husband that allows me to continue exploring creative and entrepreneurial opportunities.

My Biggest Success?

As a compulsive rule follower, I never expected that I’d be one to leave a stable dream job in pursuit of a dream that I wanted even more — to be a full-time writer. I’m really proud of the fact that I was able to fight my natural tendencies toward playing it safe in order to leave that job… and that I was actually able to achieve my goal of becoming a paid full-time writer. I had to get really resourceful and a little scrappy in order to make that happen, but nothing has made me feel more capable or strong.

My Most Challenging Moment?

My biggest success was also one of my most challenging decisions! Making the choice to leave what had been my dream job — and getting past the insecurities I had about how that would look to other people — was a months-long process, but one I now know I had to go through in order to get to the heart of my real priorities and passions.

My Motto?

William Shakespeare’s “Love all, trust few, do wrong to no one” is short and simple, but it’s summed up the way I like to approach the world around me for as long as I can remember. Add in a note about hard work, and I think you’ve got everything covered!

My Favorite People/Role Models?

I look to the women in my family — my mom, my stepmom, my Nana, and my Mom Mom — for guidance on how to make decisions and approach challenges.

Professionally, I love following Jenna Kutcher and Amber Lilyestrom. They’ve taught me so much about pursuing creative passions and trusting your gut as an entrepreneur, and have inspired me to treat my writing career as a business bigger than my bylines.

And since I’m obsessed with Harry Potter like any good nineties kid, J.K. writing is, of course, my writing idol.

My Favorite Places/Destinations?

My family and I have been vacationing in Ocean City, NJ for 25 years, and this little beach town has the most special, nostalgic place in my heart. I’m also a sucker for Disney World and Antigua, where my husband and I went on our honeymoon.

My Favorite Products/Objects?

I swear by the power combination of my Passion Planner and Power Sheets. This duo has given me the goal-setting and organizational tools I’ve needed to grow a career with only myself to look to as the boss! I also love the Gmail Boomerang extension and the Scrivener app for longer form writing.

My Current Passions?

After hours of working by myself out of my apartment, nothing makes me happier than taking a long walk in my neighborhood and listening to a good podcast. I love the Goal Digger Podcast, The Amber Lilyestrom Show, The Day in the Life podcast, Good Christian Fun, and Watch What Crappens (for a little fun and silliness). I’m also training for my fifth half marathon later this spring, so regular runs are helping me keep my cool, too.
