Dr. Bruce Fife, C.N., N.D., is an author, speaker, certified nutritionist, and naturopathic physician. He has written over 20 books including The Coconut Oil Miracle, and Stop Alzheimer’s Now! He is the publisher and editor of the Healthy Ways Newsletter and serves as the president of the Coconut Research Center, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to educate the public and medical community about the health and nutritional aspects of coconut and related foods. Dr. Fife is considered one of the world’s leading experts on dietary fats and oils. He is a popular speaker and with his wife, Leslie, travels throughout the world lecturing at health fairs, conferences, hospitals, and spas. He has appeared on hundreds of radio and television programs worldwide.

What do I do best?

When I was growing up, unlike most of my classmates, I enjoyed doing book reports and term papers. I liked doing the research, learning new things, and organizing what I had learned on paper. It is this love of research that led me to become a writer. Most of my writing deals with the science of diet and nutrition, subjects that many readers find difficult to understand. My readers often tell me they enjoy my books because I can make difficult subjects easy to understand. I think that is what I do best.What makes me the best version of myself?

I was led to the field of health and nutrition because of my desire to help people avoid and overcome health problems. I believe in empowering patients with the knowledge they need to make wise, informed choices regarding their health. Too often, people just accept the standard solution offered by their doctors, even when there are far more effective and safer options available. The information I provide gives readers the facts, some of which may be controversial, but broadens their options so that they can make informed choices. I believe my ultimate desire to help people improve their lives is what has gotten me to where I am today.

What are my aspirations?

My primary aspiration throughout my career has and is to produce books that are of true value to my readers, providing them with the knowledge they need to improve their health and better their lives.

My Biggest Success?

Back in the 1990s when I was first researching the health aspects of dietary fats and oils I discovered there was a difference in public health policy and what the science was really saying. I focused my research on saturated fats, principally coconut oil. Contrary to popular belief, I discovered that coconut oil was not the artery-clogging saturated fat it had been portrayed, but possessed numerous health benefits without adverse effects. The studies were so incredible that I was compelled to write a book titled “The Coconut Oil Miracle.” This was the first book to describe the health and nutritional benefits of this remarkable oil. For the previous two decades coconut oil was shunned as a bad fat. It was nearly impossible to find in stores because there was no demand for it. Coconuts were considered an exotic and unhealthy fruit, the equivalent to junk food. However, the success of my book shattered these misconceptions leading me to write over a dozen additional books on coconut and similar topics. As a consequence, coconut oil is now recognized as one of the healthiest of all dietary oils.

My Most Challenging Moment?

Soon after the publication of my book “The Coconut Oil Miracle” I was invited to give a lecture at a highly respected endocrinology conference. I was one of several speakers, all of whom were published authors or researchers. The audience consisted of about 300 doctors. This was the first time I had been invited to speak about the benefits of coconut oil to any audience. I was very apprehensive to say the least. Few people, let alone doctors, had any idea that coconut oil was a good saturated fat. This was my most challenging moment. In less than an hour I had to dispute decades of misinformation and prejudice that had been drilled into their minds. Nearly everyone in the audience firmly believed saturated fats caused heart disease. I didn’t change their minds that day. The audience sat in stunned silence. I could say my presentation left them speechless.

My Motto?

The closest thing I have to a motto is the old saying:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

Courage to change the things I can,

And wisdom to know the difference.

My Favorite People/Role Models?

I admire Dr. Robert Atkins, the author of “Atkins New Diet Revolution.” He championed the use of the low-carb diet as a means for weight loss and improved health. He also claimed that saturated fats were not unhealthy. He helped tens of thousands of people lose weight and achieve better overall health. Because his approach to weight loss went contrary to popular medical opinion at the time, he received a great deal of criticism and ridicule. But he had the courage to stand up and defend his beliefs. People tried in vain to disprove his claims and tarnish his character. After years of negative publicity and criticism he was finally proven right. I have followed a similar path with my promotion of coconut oil.

My Favorite Places/Destinations?

One of the benefits of being the author of books about coconut is the opportunity to travel and lecture in many tropical places. I love the beach and the tropical sun. I don’t live in this type of environment, so whenever I have the opportunity to go to a good sunny beach it is always a delight.

My Favorite Products/Objects?

My passion for the past 20 years has been teaching about the health benefits of coconut and coconut products. The coconut tree provides a number of products: coconut oil, coconut meat, coconut milk, coconut water, coconut flour, coconut sugar, coconut toddy, and more. Each of these can be used to make hundreds of other healthy food products.

My Current Passions?

My work with coconut oil has led me to research the ketogenic diet. There is a strong connection between the two. The ketogenic diet is fast growing in popularity and for good reason; the research has shown some remarkable results. This is an exciting avenue of research I have been pursuing for some years now and have written several books on the subject with more planned in the future.
