Maggie Montiel: Founder, Montiel Brands

My NativeAdVantage:

Maggie Montiel is the founder of Montiel Brands Incorporated and serves as its President and Chief Operating Officer. She is responsible for all aspects of the business, but largely dedicates her time to Sales and Marketing, social media, image and product development. Maggie is a 2006 honors graduate of Indiana University where she received her BA in apparel design, merchandising and business. Before Montiel, Maggie worked in the fashion arena as a buyer and planner, as well as the private equity world where she focused on Los Angeles-based investments. Currently based out of Los Angeles, Maggie, in many ways, represents the Montiel consumer - an active athlete who is a runner and exercises daily.

What do I do best?

I think owning and operating a small business takes grit, determination and humility. I have to be the jack of all trades and I love that I get to spearhead all aspects of my business from design and marketing to finance and shipping. It requires me to be super organized and a wicked multi-tasker. But overall it makes me a better entrepreneur. I also love meeting new people and fostering relationships. With that being said, there’s a LOT I would like to improve about myself as my company grows.

What makes me the best version of myself?

Hard work and persistence. And acknowledging that in business there are always going to be challenges…but you have to be realistic. I know there will be failures but I’ve learned to fail fast…figure out quickly what went wrong, give myself a short amount of time to dwell on it and then move on to the next endeavor by implementing what I’ve learned. That’s something that has been incredibly impactful in my mindset and for the success of my business.

What are my aspirations?

From a business perspective, I strive to continue growing Montiel. My ultimate goal is for it to be a leader within the fitness space and have an empowering impact on not just the industry but for women across the board. To me fitness is an integral part of my life and I think we have such momentum to positively impact people with fitness at the crux.

On a personal level, I’d love to evolve my area of interest and design in other aspects of the industry such as swim, ladies fashion, maternity and children’s wear. I would also love to one day have a family. But in the meantime, I love hanging out with my 3-year-old niece. Seeing the world through her eyes is pretty spectacular. She keeps me grounded, on my toes and a has a killer sense of style…think all pink all the time.

My Biggest Success?

This is a tough one, talking about myself is not one of my strengths. But I would have to say building my business from the ground up. It was/is my baby and I’ve experienced being able to build it with my own blood, sweat and tears. Even on the hard days…especially on the hard days, there is something really incredible about taking a step back and seeing that this has all come to fruition because of my vision and hard work. When I see Montiel in the news or get a great customer review – that’s what it’s all about.

My Most Challenging Moment?

Making the decision to go for it. Starting a business is scary stuff but thinking about it wasn’t going to make it real. So I had to go for it and that was probably the most difficult decision I’ve ever made. If I did it and had failed then so be it. But if I never tried, I would always be second guessing what could have been. I thought I had a good idea, a passion for fitness and an apparel background but I had to learn everything else in the book and started from the ground up. Looking back, I made a ton of mistakes but learned so much about myself and my business.

My Motto?

Be kind, listen, engage and smile.

My Favorite People/Role Models?

Megan Markel is my ultimate girl crush at the moment. Her poise, passion and intellect is infectious.

My Favorite Places/Destinations?

The Amalfi Coast in Italy. It’s breathtakingly beautiful and yet so simple at the same time. It’s truly the perfect place to clear your mind and appreciate life.

My Favorite Products/Objects?

A jump rope because I can take it anywhere, green juice every day and Fresh Soy face cream.

My Current Passions?

I’m really excited about the momentum in this industry. There are a lot of competitors but that means people are serious about fitness and pushes me even more.
