Dr. Athena Perrakis: Founder & CEO, Sage Goddess

My NativeAdVantage:

Bio:

Dr. Athena Perrakis is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Sage Goddess, the world’s largest source of sacred tools and metaphysical education. Each week, Sage Goddess reaches almost two million people across the globe, on every continent and in more than 60 countries. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California in educational leadership, and has 15 years of experience as a professor, corporate trainer and consultant, and educator. Athena has traveled the globe and worked with CEOs and senior executives from the Fortune 50 companies. But her metaphysical experience, in which her current work is largely rooted, spans more than 30 years. During that time, she has become an expert in gemology, astrology, Tarot, aromatherapy, Reiki, and herbal medicine. Her Etsy shop was the first online metaphysical storefront to reach the Top 10 stores in the handmade category around the world. Today, there are more than 3000 products available through SageGoddess.com – everything from essential oils and ritual perfumes to candles, jewelry, gemstones in every form, home decor, clothing, body art and temporary tattoos, canvas art, and more.

What do I do best?

Teach. I’m a natural-born teacher. Of anything. When I was in college and training to become a university professor, I thought one could only teach well one thing, have one specific topic of expertise, but what I  learned in my later years is that teaching is a skill with many applications. I love to introduce people to new concepts, places, and experiences. I am brave and I’ll always go first, bringing you back the wisdom of time and sometimes the wisdom of mistakes. A good teacher recognizes that she knows a lot but not all. She’s readily able to say, in response to any question, “I don’t know, but let’s find out.” I am curious. The smartest people I know are the most curious.

What makes me the best version of myself?

Connecting deeply on a soul level with people. I find hope in humanity. When the cares of the world seem too great, or when I lose sight of my center, my true north, I come back to the best and highest aspects of myself through laughter and connection. Through love.

What are my aspirations?

I want to be the fullest expression of my particular consciousness. In other words, I want to be the best and biggest Me I can be. When I am that, everything else I desire comes with ease.

My Biggest Success?

The day my children were born, that was success to me. The title of mom is way more important than CEO, though the day I saw the letters CEO after my name on official documents felt like success too. Earning my PhD before I turned 30. Staying married to my soulmate despite life’s ever-present challenges. Building a life I love, and doing work that aligns completely with who I am in my spirit. Having my kids tell me I’m a good mom.

My Most Challenging Moment?

The day I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, which was in 2011. I was traveling on business when I lost my vision. I had no idea what was happening. I was rushed to an ophthalmologist by the CEO of the company I was consulting to, and was told I either had a brain tumor or MS and I needed to get home for MRI to confirm. My children were 2 and 4 when the doctor said to me, “You have MS.” I felt blessed, because the alternative was so bad in my mind. At moments like those, time stands still. I can tell you where I was sitting, what I was wearing, what time it was to the minute, when I heard those words.

My Motto?

It’s actually a quote attributed to Plato: “Be kind, for everyone you know is fighting a hard battle.” That’s just solid life advice. You’ll make fewer mistakes if you can follow it.

My Favorite People/Role Models?

I admire people who bridge the seeming divide between their spiritual or personal lives and their professional lives, and people who show up authentically no matter how sticky and tricky that may be. For me, Nelson Mandela, Sir Richard Branson, Marina Abramovic come to mind. They weren’t and aren’t afraid to show you difficult things, and in fact they make difficult things beautiful, but in the same breath they will tell you how blessed you are to be alive in this moment.

My Favorite Places/Destinations?

The moon in my natal astrological chart is placed in Sagittarius, in the house of travel. Sagittarius is the sign of travel. I long for uncharted waters, distant lands that somehow in my soul feel familiar. My favorite saying is “5 hours from now I can be somewhere more interesting.” Of the countries I’ve visited, Australia charmed me most. There’s an idyllic essence to that place, balanced by an ancient subterranean wisdom, that is transformational to the soul. I was married on Maui, on an ancient burial ground, in a ceremony that required approval by the keeper of the space as it is kapu or forbidden to access without permission. I believe modern Hawaii sits above an ancient lost civilization called Mu that still speaks to many of us who had experiences there. Hawaii will always have my heart. One day I plan to build a retreat center there and host guests almost year-round.

My Favorite Products/Objects?

Jewelry, hands down. I’m an amulet girl. I believe that historically amulets and talismans have been important tools of power and possibility. I believe that when you wear a crystal or gemstone you change your personal vibrational frequency and that everyone around you can feel it, benefit from it. Adornment is a public service in my world! I have a vast collection that would probably cause your jaw to drop. I’m very intentional about what I choose to wear each day. And then I have about 10 pieces of jewelry I never take off – not to shower, never. Those are my object links to personal power.

My Current Passions?

I’m deeply passionate about human potential, healing, and manifestation. I am pouring energy and passion into my teaching at the moment – heart and soul. I teach four online classes each month under the umbrella of my Holistic Healer program: Gem Wise, which is a course on gems, crystals, and crystal healing; AroMagic which is my course on aromatherapy; Magical Sabbatical, which is my course on energy work, healing, and transformation; and Illumina, which is my course on advanced magic, ritual, and ceremony. The demand for my online courses has never been more pronounced, and I think that’s because people are ready for a higher level of learning and wisdom. Many of my students wish they could go back to school and earn a degree in metaphysics. In a way, I offer that to them!
