Luís Cabral: Chair of the Economics Department & the Paganelli-Bull Professor of Economics and International Business at NYU Stern

My NativeAdVert:

Luís Cabral is currently the Paganelli-Bull Professor of Economics and International Business at NYU's Stern School of Business, as well as Chair of the Economics Department. A native of Portugal, he graduated from Stanford University (PhD, Economics, 1989) and taught at the London Business School, Berkeley, Yale, NYU and IESE. He consulted with a variety of organizations (firms, universities, governments, tax and law enforcement agencies, even sports teams) on a variety of economics issues. He was a leading expert witness in the Airbus-Boeing WTO disputes. From 2004-2009, he was a member of European Commission President Barroso's Group of Economic Policy Analysis (a group of 12 members).

Other than economics, Cabral's interests include painting (his art work has been exhibited on both sides of the Atlantic) and saxophone playing (performed with the NYU Stern Faculty All Stars and other equally reputed bands).

My NativeAdVantage:

What do you do best?

Doing many things at an OK level, being what they call a "slasher" (e.g., economist/painter)

What makes you the best?

A sufficiently narrow comparison group (e.g., Portuguese-born microeconomics researchers who reside in New York City and are interested in both watercolor painting and alto saxophone playing).

What are your aspirations?

To be a good person; but that's way too vague. Right now, I am thinking I would like to be a decent jazz saxophone player.

Biggest Success?

Training economics researchers who've led successful careers.

Most Challenging Moment?

It's taking me so long to answer this one that I am inclined to write: finishing this questionnaire.

Favorite Motto?

Whatever is worth doing, is worth doing well. This was my maternal grandfather's motto, and I adopted it as well (which, alas, does not imply that I have followed it).

Favorite People?

My parents.

Favorite Places?

The wilderness area in Yosemite National Park.

Favorite Products?

Velcro.

Current Passions?

Painting, music, sailing, chess, wine, mathematics, computing, … and many, many more, including the very diverse people I have had the privilege to meet and work with: I love life and the many things and people that it brings my way. OK, I guess this is very vague, so here's more: today, as I finish answering this questionnaire, my passion is to run 10k in Central Park and best my own personal record (which I am too embarrassed to disclose in public).
