After graduating from Cornell University in 1990, Bill Reisacher pursued his medical education in New York City at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine and The New York Eye & Ear Infirmary. Dr. Reisacher is an ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctor and entrepreneur who lives in Manhattan with his wife, Cynthia, his daughter and two sons. He specializes in the treatment of allergies and co-founded Allovate, a NYC-based biotechnology company dedicated to developing innovative and patient-friendly allergy treatments, in 2012. Dr. Reisacher is the creator of Allerdent, a unique toothpaste designed to give long-lasting relief to people suffering from allergies.
What do you do best?
My biggest strengths are my creativity and constant curiosity. As a songwriter, I’ve spend many hours sitting at the piano solving problems with words and music in order to create something beautiful. As a surgeon, problem-solving saves lives, but this skill is also very important as an entrepreneur. In my medical practice, I noticed that the current allergy treatments were difficult for people to maintain for 3-5 years. I figured that if I could incorporate this treatment into the daily ritual of tooth brushing, then more people would complete their therapy and get better results!
What makes you the best?
When I want to be the best at something, I visualize it over and over again. Then, once it’s clear in my mind, all I have to do is find the right path that gets me there. For a company, this process starts with a brand new idea, like Allerdent, which has the potential to disrupt an entire industry. But being part of a skilled, hard-working team like Allovate, is equally as important. My co-founders and I enjoy spending time together both inside and outside the office.
How will you stay the best?
The way to for me to stay on top is by always thinking a few steps ahead of others in my field and never letting fear keep me from adapting to changes in the world. Likewise, a company has to always be aware of what their customers want and have a clear idea about where the market is going. Allovate is currently focused on treating airborne allergies, like pollen and cats, but also has plans to target food allergies and other diseases in the future.
What are your aspirations: business & personal?
My highest personal aspiration is to be the best husband, father and son that I can be. My goal is to work on projects that are exciting and meaningful to me, as well as beneficial to society. I think it’s very important to devote some time each day to family, physical exercise, creative expression, good food and quiet moments for personal reflection. For my children, I hope I can guide them towards pathways that give them stability and a sense of purpose in life.
For my career, it’s very important to find the right balance between maintaining a successful medical practice and growing Allovate into a globally-thriving biotech company. The desire to help people is what makes me a physician, and that same passion drives the entrepreneur in me.
What fascinates you?
When I look at my three beautiful teenage children, I’m amazed at how fast they’ve grown up. It’s fascinating to see personality traits from both me and Cynthia in them. I’ve learned to enjoy every moment with my family, never postponing an afternoon in the park or a night at the movies. In a similar way, it’s been fascinating to see Allerdent grow up from a small idea inside my head into an actual product. Whenever someone tells me how much it has improved their allergies, I feel like a proud father.
“Just because it hasn’t been done doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be done.”
I like spending time with people who have a good sense of humor and lots of interesting hobbies. Whether sharing a glass of wine or discussing the meaning of life, a friend is someone you can always depend on and feel comfortable being around.
The hours I’ve spent at the beach are the most peaceful moments of my life. Growing up on New York’s Long Island, I worked as a lifeguard and practically lived in the water. Every time I look out across the ocean, I’m reminded how powerful nature is, and this helps me keep things in perspective.
I like products that are not only functional and easy to use, but also aesthetically pleasing, like Birchbox. Customers should enjoy using a product, and this starts with a unique, creatively-designed package. For Allerdent, we created a refreshing toothpaste with flavors that both adults and kids will enjoy.
I love performing stand-up comedy because it requires me to live in the moment, think fast and not take myself too seriously! Getting a laugh on stage is the best feeling in the world, and there is so much energy in the New York City clubs. To me, the most important part of being a comedian is honesty and letting myself be vulnerable enough to make a connection with people in the audience. And when I’m having a good time, so are they!
