Dr. Lindred L. Greer: Professor, Speaker, and Writer

My NativeAdVantage: Professor, Author, and Public Speaker

Bio:

Dr. Lindred L. Greer is a professor of Organizational Behavior at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. She teaches the core Groups and Teams course in the MBA program, and she recently launched a course on the Psychology of Start-up Teams. Professor Greer’s research focuses on the impact of team composition on intragroup conflict and team performance, particularly in early stage start-up teams. She has a particular interest in how teams are composed in terms of power, status, and leadership structures, and when and why particular forms of team composition may fuel power struggles and conflicts within organizational teams. When investigating teams, she often adopts a multi-level theoretical approach in understanding how individuals within the same team may differentially experience team structures and processes. In carrying out her research, she employs a variety of methods, including field (ranging from survey to quasi-experimental studies), laboratory, and archival research. Her research appears in academic journals such as Science, Journal of Applied Psychology, and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes.

Professor Greer is Associate Editor at the journal Small Group Research, and she is on the editorial boards at the Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes. She has received numerous professional awards, including the American Psychological Association Division 49 Best Dissertation Awards, best paper awards from the Academy of Management and the International Association of Conflict Management, best reviewer awards from the Academy of Management journal, and best teacher awards, including the Hamaker Teaching Prize. She regularly engages in public speaking for both university and corporate events, and is frequently mentioned in the popular media. Professor Greer joined the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2013. She received her BS at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and her PhD in Social and Organizational Psychology at Leiden University in the Netherlands.

What do you do best?

Conceptual thinking, Creativity, and Sharing my passion for teams with others I love thinking about ideas – watching people interact and developing and testing predictions of what drives their interpersonal dynamics. Living my life in a constant state of people-watching and developing creative research questions from them is an absolute passion for me, and has been infinitely valuable for both my research and teaching.

What makes you the best?

Resiliency, Passion, and Organization In the university world, similar to other professions, there are a lot of ups and downs. The ability to navigate this – to be resilient - is the most essential trait for success. For me personally, I learned the adage of ‘if you fall, get back on again’ at an early age with horseback riding, and that mentality to rise to face every challenge I think has been essential in my career so far. Additionally, and relatedly, I think part of what enables this resilience is my absolute passion for what I do – I get to live out my absolute dream career on a daily basis, and my love for what I do – thinking about how people interact day in and day out – helps me stay strong and focused. Last, in order to manage everything that comes with a busy career, I tend to be (perhaps overly) organized – there is always a Plan B, C, D, and maybe E for every given situation at work, both in terms of teaching and research. Being organized and well-prepared always helps plan out my next steps when its time to pivot.

How will you become the best?

Staying strong, believing the dream, working fanatically, and never giving up! I believe that getting to the top comes from having big dreams, believing in and chasing them, and never giving up on them. Maybe you end up in a slightly different place than you initially imagined, but you’re always better off than not having thrown yourself into the quest in the first place.

What are your aspirations: business & personal?

Personal: Competing at the international level in dressage (a form of horseback riding, think ballroom dancing with a horse)

Business: Writing the definitive popular book on the psychology of start-up teams to help more start-ups make it big! And even more importantly, getting tenure at Stanford!

What fascinates you?

People! Everything about them. At the moment, particularly fascinated by the dynamics of early stage start-up teams – why they work and why they fail.
