Gwen Keefe: Creator of Poli Sippy Cup

My NativeAdVantage:

Bio:

When my 2 children were babies I was at wit’s end with traditional and straw sippy cups.  I couldn’t find a sippy cup that was easy-to-clean without so many parts.  Many traditional spill-resistant sippy cups feature constricted passageways which make it difficult to adequately clean.  Cleaning the cups then became a real chore to make sure sticky juice or old milk did not accumulate and breed bacteria and/or mold.  That, and hunting for the tiny and transparent valve in obscure places.  They got lost easily and drove me crazy.  The cups were no longer spill-proof without the valve.  I was spending extra money to buy replacement parts or new cups.  That’s when I decided that todays’ modern moms needed a better choice.

My Poli sippy cups solve all those problems with a unique patented “easy to clean and no parts to lose” design. The small parts come apart for easy cleaning and can go right in the dishwasher for a thorough cleaning.  Small parts are tethered to the inside of the lid and will not get lost in obscure places. Our sippy cups come in three original nursery rhyme designs which were hand drawn and colored by me.  Each illustration took over 30 hours to complete.  You can choose from Humpty Dumpty, Hey Diddle Diddle and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.  I love painting and I enjoy teaching children to read.  I taught for ten years.

These experiences led me to create a sippy cup that is playful as well as educational.  Did you know nursery rhymes promote early reading skills?  My students and my own children learned to read earlier by singing and memorizing them. Our Poli sippy cups are safe and made in America – BPA, phthalates and lead free.  One less worry on your mind. And, with Poli’s easy to clean design you’ll have more time for yourself.

So…what will you do with your extra time today?

What’s Your NativeAdVantage:

What do you do best?

I’m best at being a perfectionist but sometimes being a perfectionist is not easy because I never stop working.   Being a perfectionist helps me to create a product that is better than my competitors.

What makes you the best?

What makes me the best is I have an art back ground which means I can see details ordinary people can’t see.  I know right away when something looks good and when something looks bad.  My vision has helped me to create original artwork to go on my product and unique packaging.  It also helps to work with an amazing graphic designer.

How will you become the best?

I become the best by making adjustments on myself everyday.  I am extremely critical of myself and compare myself to other entrepreneurs constantly which I need to stop.  Instead, I need to celebrate the milestones and small successes that come along.  Trends come and go but providing a unique product on the market that no one else has to offer is better and that’s how I distinguish myself to be the best.  On top of that, offering quality is important and helps me to stand out from other products.

What are your aspirations?

Personal: My kids are my aspirations everyday to become better and never give up.  After all, I am their first role model and need to exemplify that by always working on myself.  I think it’s important for my kids to see how much effort and hard work it takes to be successful.  Today instant gratification comes too easily for them.  My kids need to see through me that quitting is not an option so everyday I wake up and strive to do better.  Otherwise, without my kids I would have quit a long time ago.  Creating a new product is really, really hard and to sell it is equally hard too.

Business: Also, parents who love Poli sippy cup aspires me to keep going in my business.  They are my testimonials and remind me I am doing something worthwhile.  Having a business can be exhausting physically and emotionally but every once in a while when a parent tells me how Poli sippy cup has been a lifesaver it makes it worth it.

What fascinates you?

Life in itself is fascinating because we are all on stage acting out our role and it’s up to each person to do their best.  At times my role can be really difficult and challenging but I always tell myself things will improve if I just keep trying.

Favorite:

My favorite thing to do (besides spending time with my family) is meditate, read, and listen to music.  I like to keep my life simple but seems utterly impossible when you have a business.  There is so much to do and I don’t have very much help.

Motto:

I had a lot of fear starting my business.  My motto is to look fear in the face and fear ceases.  It’s the only way fear will go away.

People:

I do my best to like everyone I meet and be present when I’m with them.  My fear is ending up like many people on my iphone instead of connecting with people.

Places:

Oh the places I’ll go when I have time one day… My dream is my business will take off on Amazon soon and I can work from anywhere instead of just my home.  Meaning Amazon will do the fulfillment for my orders and I can travel all over the world.  I love to travel and used to travel all over Europe before having kids.

Products:

I fell in love with Apple when my brother gave me his old laptop.  It is simply amazing how intuitive it is to use it.

Passions:

My passion is to help make the world a little better by helping out in my community through charity work with Assistant League.  I recently became a Rick Racker member and the one of the biggest operations a RR member has to do is help clothe 8K kids in Long Beach by September before they start school.  Each child receives 2 sets of uniform.
