PAUL GUNNING: PRESIDENT & COO, DDB/U.S.

A 19-year veteran of DDB Worldwide, Paul Gunning, has held several leadership positions within the network. In his current role as President & COO of DDB/U.S., Paul oversees five of DDB’s U.S. agencies including, DDB’s Chicago, New York and San Francisco offices, Rodgers Townsend, and Tribal/New York, managing all the agencies’ talent, business operations, and resources. Paul was elevated to the COO role in June 2018, after serving as President and CEO of DDB Chicago. During his tenure as CEO, DDB Chicago maintained and grew the agency’s long-term client partnerships and grew the agency’s client roster and capabilities.

Prior to assuming the DDB Chicago role in 2013, Paul served as DDB Worldwide’s Chief Digital Officer and Chief Executive Officer of Tribal Worldwide since 2008. As CEO of Tribal Worldwide, he headed a global network of over 60 offices and was very hands on with senior clients helping to guide them in the changing dynamics of the digital world. In his role as Chief Digital Officer for DDB, Paul helped the agency expand its services and incorporate digital skills sets into DDB offices. In both roles, he maintained senior-level relationships with the Internet’s most powerful brands including Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Apple, and more. Early on, Paul held a variety of positions at interactive advertising agencies, hi-tech merchandising companies and promotions agencies.

What do you love most about Your City?

Chicago sports – we’ve got Da Bears. Da Bulls. Da Cubs…what’s not to love? Sports in Chicago are legendary and one of the best things about the city.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

I like Frances’ Deli & Brunchery which is on the city’s north side. They’ve got a really good blood mary bar and I usually order one with lots of spice.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM – Responding to emails and walking the family dog Coach. He and I usually walk a couple miles and take care of the morning round of emails I’ve received.

10:00 AM – Sending more emails, talking with clients or meeting with DDBers.

12:00 PM - Favorite Power Lunch spot/meal? -

Shaw’s Crab House – my go-to order is the sesame crusted tuna.

7:00 PM -  Replying to the latest batch of emails in my inbox and preparing for what I’ve got on the docket for the next day.

11:00 PM – Signing off of email and trying to wrap up the day.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

To get through the day, I need to drink sparkling water. At the end of the day, I like to have a glass of red wine.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

I travel a lot between DDB’s U.S. offices, so I use the American Airlines app the most. My favorite Instagram account is Barstool Sports.

What should everyone try at least once?

Anyone that comes to Chicago, I always recommend they go on the Chicago Architecture Tour at least once. It’s the best way to see the city.

Where do you enjoy getting lost?

I get lost in the Virgin Islands – every time I’m there, we find a new area to explore.
