Danielle Swimm is a therapist and owner of Collide Behavioral Health, LLC. Her clinical concentration is helping people overcome binge eating disorder. She uses a holistic approach in therapy and treats adolescents and adults struggling with anxiety, eating disorders, poor body image and addiction. She is a regular contributor to Psychology Today, where she writes about eating disorder treatment. She also has been featured in HuffPost and Bustle. Today she enjoys speaking, writing, seeing clients at her practice and helping people heal their relationship with food and their bodies.

My Goal of the Day:  Today my goal was to get clear on my vision. I wanted to write out a 6 month timeline of what I want my practice to look like, how I want it to grow and ways to improve work-life balance as it expands. I went to a coffee shop first thing this morning, got a pen and paper out and spent about 30 minutes nailing down my vision. I always feel re-energized when I have a clear picture of my goals. I do well with a clear, strategic plan and lose focus when I don’t have one.

My Thought of the Day:  “Never make a decision based off of fear”. This is something I often use in my own life. I’ll ask myself, if I wasn’t scared to do this, would I do it? The answer is often yes, so I push through the fear and accomplish the task.  Fear holds so many of us back from living the life we were meant to live. I talk about fear a lot with my clients and have done a lot of personal work myself, to become aware of my own fears and how to work through them.

My Tip of the Day: Make your mental health a priority. Health is being talked about more and more, but mental health is often left out of the conversation. Even if you are not struggling with a mental health condition, there are still ways to improve and tend to your emotional wellbeing. For some people this means going to therapy, starting a yoga practice or taking time off work to recharge and balance yourself.  Whatever it looks like for you, find what reduces stress and helps you reconnect to yourself. Being preventative with your mental health can take you a long way.

My Pic of the Day: 

I love this quote because there are so many times in our lives where we find ourselves in the wrong story. Maybe it’s the wrong relationship, the wrong career, the wrong choices, the wrong habits. In the work I do people find themselves suffering from an eating disorder and decide they don’t want to live their life feeling like that anymore. This quote always reminds us that we have the options to leave the story we are in now and start something new. That’s why I love being a therapist, because I get to witness people starting a new chapter and taking a chance to leave the story they are currently in. It gives me goosebumps on a regular basis.

A Day in My Life:

What do you love most about Your City?

The water. My office is less than a 5 minute drive to water front restaurants. Annapolis is a beautiful little town, full of culture and possibilities. It gets overshadowed by the surrounding Washington D.C. and Baltimore areas, but I love working in a hidden gem. It’s big enough to have a lot of opportunities but small enough to get to know the community well.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

It varies daily. I really listen to my body, what it wants and how much. I following Intuitive Eating (an excellent book, I’d highly recommend!) and love to experiment with new foods as the seasons change.  Recently, I have been loving cinnamon oatmeal with sausage for breakfast and a hot cut of black tea. My favorite restaurant is Cooper’s Hawk. I’m a meat and potatoes girl and their steak and seafood is to die for!

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM – Either sleeping or just waking up. I wake up anywhere between 6:00-6:30 most days.

10:00 AM – Working. I have my cup of tea or coffee and am usually at my office seeing clients, or at my home office working on my laptop. I’m a morning person so I do my best work early in the day.

12:00 PM - Favorite Lunch spot/meal?

Paenera knows me on a first name basis. I go there way too often! I love their sandwiches, soups and salads. I keep thinking I’ll get sick of it but it’s yet to happen.

7:00 PM -  At home, disconnected from work and spending time with my family. I like watching light hearted shows that make me laugh (laughter is the best medicine!) and I’ve been loving Impractical Jokers recently. Nothing can make me laugh out loud like that show.

11:00 PM – Asleep. I start getting tired around 9PM and am usually asleep by 10PM. I was such a night person all through graduate school and would stay up until 2AM doing homework but over the past few years I’ve truly transitioned to a morning person and feel much better since doing so. Aligning my circadian rhythms with sunrise and sunset (when possible) gives me the most energy. Plus, I love how quiet and peaceful my mornings are.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

Currently, it’s tea. With the weather getting cooler I sip on green tea, black tea or herbal teas. I’m a fan of Sleepy Time Tea if I want something relaxing before bed.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

Trello. I have a busy mind that is constantly coming up with new ideas for my business or for my clients. I jot down books I want to read, ideas I want to work on and have a long “To Do” list. Trello helps keep my mind organized and prevent me from getting overwhelmed.

What should everyone try at least once?

Whatever inspires you. If you feel pulled to go in a certain direction in life, give it a try, regardless of what others say. So many people have opinions of what you “should” be doing. Many people had opinions of me starting my own practice when I did and I did not let other’s opinions stop me. Stay true to yourself and silence any other noise.

Where do you enjoy getting lost?

In a book (introvert alert!). I read personal development books and like books that truly inspire me. Currently I’m reading “She Means Business” by Carrie Green and love how much it motivates me. Now if I can pair a good book, with laying on a sunny beach, I’m golden.
