Barbara A. Jaffe Ed.D: Author

My NativeAdVert:

Barbara Jaffe completed her B.A. in Linguistics, her M.A. in Applied Linguistics, and her doctorate in Education, all from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr. Jaffe was a Tenured Professor of English in California and retired after four decades as a college professor, 26 at El Camino College.  Her focus was helping students find their own, unique writers’ voices and also helped other instructors in their teaching of writing through her national workshops.  Barbara received awards for Outstanding Woman of the Year and Distinguished Teacher of the Year at her college.  Her doctoral research focused on teacher training for basic writing instructors that combined writing pedagogy with personal success strategies. She has been a UCLA Fellow in the Department of Education for 14 years, working with doctoral students as they craft their dissertation proposals. Reading and writing has always been Barbara’s passions, with a focus on non-fiction and meaningful reflections of life and all its beauty as well as its challenges through memoir. Barbara feels to live is to observe and to observe most deeply is to write.  Only in the depth of our reflections can we truly learn and grow through any of our limitations.  A fourth generation San Franciscan native, she has spent her adult life living in Los Angeles with her husband, three sons, two grandchildren, and her very sweet poodle/bichon Emma. In 2017, Barbara’s memoir and self-help book was published: When Will I Be Good Enough? A Replacement Child’s Journey to Healing.

My Goal of the Day: To learn something new and walk with gratitude!

My Thought of the Day: I am completely responsible for the choices I make today and every day.

My Action of the Day: To add to the world in a positive way, whether it is in my writing, with my students, or with a smile.

My Deed of the Day: To add joy to those I encounter while keeping some for myself.

My Tip of the Day: I try to listen more and talk less.  I learn so much more this way.

My Pic of the Day:

A Day in My Life:

What do you love most about Your City?

I love the diversity of people and locals and the kinds of activities that Los Angeles offers. I can go to the mountains, the ocean, the park, a mall all in the same day!  I can appreciate the symphony, live theater and movies whenever I want.  The vibrancy of the people, the streets, and the foods provides me with a deep sense of enjoyment and satisfaction every day.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

I am not a 100% breakfast person even though I know it’s the most important meal of the day. However, when I do go out for breakfast, I enjoy 7-grain pancakes and an Americano (with 3 shots of Espresso!). When I am at home, I enjoy granola and yogurt.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM – I am writing.  I wake around 5:00-5:30 and after I get dressed, while sipping my coffee, I sit at my computer and write, with my sweet Emma (my poodle-bichon) by my side.

10:00 AM – On the days I am with my two amazing grandchildren, I am playing (from 6:30 a.m.).  We are at the park, a museum, or at a children’s gym.  On other days, I am volunteering at the Museum of Tolerance or am with a friend or my recently-retired husband.

12:00 PM - Favorite Lunch spot/meal?

I am home most days for lunch, but I adore the Chicken Chopped Salad at Westside Tavern.  It’s filled with chicken, candied pralines, avocado, and bacon. What could be better?

7:00 PM – I am either reading a book on my Kindle, i-pad or hard copy.  If not, I am watching television with my husband.  We sit side by side and enjoy this time together as we talk about some shows and if I am honest, I sleep through others, but we are always together!

11:00 PM – Most nights I have been asleep for one hour by 11:00 p.m. Because I get up so early in the morning, I try to go to sleep no later than 10:00. Most nights, I crawl into my cozy bed and read for 30 minutes, turning out the lights at 10:00.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

At the beginning of the day, I need my strong cup of coffee (2 Keurig pods).  Around 10:00, I often treat myself to a Nespresso or a Starbucks.  That’s the end of my coffee enjoyment for the day.  I have wine, sometimes before dinner, a delicious Chardonnay.  Throughout the day, I drink lots of water, at least 60 oz. a day.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

My favorite Instagram Account is Writing_Inspiration.

What should everyone try at least once?

Getting a tattoo. It’s a unique, exciting, and special form of expression.  I have several and it’s worth doing once in your life (at least!)

Where do you enjoy getting lost?

In a museum. I could wonder forever, encountering art I have never seen or returning time and again to the same exhibits for new insight. Particularly, the Getty Museum provides amazing choices of art, gardens, places to sit and contemplate and write as well as wonderful restaurants
