Puppett: Award Winning Filmmaker & Actor

My NativeAdVert:

Puppett has been passionate about filmmaking and performing since childhood. She started out in bands, first as a drummer and later a lead singer, before moving into drag performance. As a drag king, Puppett was a core member of Liberty City Kings Drag & Burlesque Troupe in Philadelphia for two years until 2011, when she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in filmmaking. Her on-screen credits include a Guest Star role on CATFISH: THE UNTOLD STORIES and supporting roles in DRIFTER (feature film) and THE MID-AUTUMN DINNER (short film). You can see Puppett on stage at The Odyssey Theatre this coming January where she'll be playing the role of MAX in the Los Angeles Premiere of Taylor Mac's HIR. A graduate of University of the Arts, her short films have screened in over 50 festivals worldwide, including Slamdance, Inside Out Toronto, and Outfest Los Angeles.

Puppett's directorial debut WEDLOCKED is a comedy about LGBTQ divorce inequality in a pre-Obergefell v Hodges America. Penned by Guinevere Turner (American Pyscho, The L Word) and produced with Christine Moore and Ally Iseman, WEDLOCKED is available to stream online at www.seedandspark.com/watch/wedlocked. Teaming up with Christine Moore a second time, Puppett directed GLENDA, a love letter to TWIN PEAKS which premiered at the 2016 Slamdance Film Festival and can be viewed online at vimeo.com/puppett/glenda. Puppett recently directed an episode of the upcoming web-series RAZOR TONGUE, created by Rain Valdez, and she produced TOO MANY BODIES, a music video dealing with gun violence in America. Directed by Reena Dutt, the video leads viewers to a website, www.TooManyBodies.org, with resources for survivors and loved ones as well as information on advocacy and voting for common sense gun laws.

My Goal of the Day:  Vote like my rights depend on it.

My Thought of the Day: A friend sent me this text message today: “In the wise words of the P90X workout videos, 'Do your best and forget the rest.'” That sounds right.

My Action of the Day: Memorize lines for the play I'll be in. A little each day adds up to a lot.

My Deed of the Day: I voted early by mail.

My Tip of the Day: Go to Sage Vegan Bistro for a great dinner.

And here's a bonus tip: sticking it out in Los Angeles is a marathon, so take breaks and get out of the city sometimes. Go to Lake Arrowhead for a weekend getaway (if you like lakes, trees, mountains, wind, nature and/or cute towns).

My Pic of the Day:

A Day in My Life:

What do you love most about Your City?

Los Angeles is full of people pursuing their dream careers, in a variety of artistic and academic fields including but not limited to filmmaking, and that's a wonderful atmosphere. I love that Los Angeles has renewable energy goals and is a Santuary City.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

I love so many breakfast foods. I think my favorite would have to be taking Trader Joe's hash browns, mashing them up with sauteed onions, letting it all brown, and then throwing an over-easy/medium-ish egg on top. And I love a dirty chai or vanilla latte with soy milk in the morning.

My favorite breakfast spot is Millie's Cafe in Silver Lake. But when I have a billion dollars, my favorite breakfast spot will be Crossroads Kitchen. Have you tried their vegan chicken and waffles?

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM – Sleeping (pretty please). But if I'm not sleeping I better be on a film set, since that's the only good excuse for being up that early.

10:00 AM - This is the start of my workday at Seed&Spark, a film-centric crowdfunding and SVOD platform that emphasizes inclusion across all of its crowdfunding and streaming content. I am the Streaming Operations Manager here and handle day-to-day work around getting new films and shows up on our site. (Fun Fact: my short film Wedlocked is available to stream on the site: www.seedandspark.com/watch/wedlocked)

On Wednesdays and Saturdays I can be found at my chiropractor's office at 10AM. I have chronic pain from lifelong scoliosis and my chiropractor and I are working backwards through scar tissue to give me a better quality of life. There have been times where I questioned whether I could have the career I wanted because of medical issues, and I want people who may be having those same thoughts to know that it's okay, and to keep working toward their goals.

12:00 PM - Favorite Lunch spot/meal?

I love Yuko Kitchen and Yuko Soup Bar. Yuko Yuko Yuko. In addition to portion sizes that actually fill me up, they also have frozen mint lemonade. And when it's blazing hot outside, you can get it with alcohol for happy hour. Hello.

7:00 PM - I'm home feeding my cats, snuggling cats, having cats climb on me, generally just surrounded by cats. I take a break to eat some dinner and say hi to my partner. Then my “night shift” will kick in. This is when I do my other work (submit for roles on casting sites, look over scripts, review edits for films I directed, memorize lines, etc etc etc).

11:00 PM - If I'm not too swamped with work, I'll kick back with a TV show before heading to bed between midnight and 2am. I'm trying to get better at going to bed on the earlier side of that window. On the other hand, if I have a lot going on I'll still be working... that fimmaker/actor grind.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

WATER. My childhood self is very confused by this, since I grew up on soda, and in High School I transitioned from soda to juice. But I had a really hard time drinking water as a kid because I thought it tasted bad when it wasn't filtered and cold. Truthfully, I still think it tastes bad when it isn't filtered and cold. But I'm an adult now, so I can make sure I have cold, filtered water around. And I absolutely need water around.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

My most used App has to be Waze. I'd get lost without it. Very lost.

What should everyone try at least once?

Frozen grapes.

Where do you enjoy getting lost?

I use Waze so I don't get lost...
