SYLVIA RAY: Writer, Drector & Co-founder, VKTRY Creative Studios

SYLVIA RAY is a writer, director, and co-founder of VKTRY Creative Studios. As a storyteller, she is passionate about projects that are inclusive, fearless, and truthful. Having grown up in a small desert town -- where nearly half the population lives beneath the poverty line -- and moving to Los Angeles as a young adult, she draws inspiration from her own self discipline and determination, and provides a unique perspective as a Korean/Mexican-American woman. Sylvia has directed shorts that have been selected for festivals like Middle Coast Film Festival and has been asked to speak on several panels. She has also worked creatively with clients such as Magnopus, Disney, and Disney-Pixar. She is an active member of Women in Film and the Los Angeles Women's Film Collective. Sylvia is a California native, was born and raised in the high desert, and earned a degree in Communications while minoring in Asian Studies at Cal State Fullerton. She currently lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two sons.

My Goal of the Day: My goal today is to keep taking steps towards building my craft as a filmmaker.

My Thought of the Day: I wish I had more time but it’s a beautiful day.

My Action of the Day: JUST ONE?! HA!

Today I need to register Heaven’s Hell, a script that I co-wrote with Lowam Eyasu (and based of the graphic designs of Anthony Jones) with the WGA.  I need to re-read the latest version of Heaven’s Hell. I need to start writing a short script called Witch Hunt (which is in my brain) so I can submit it to the WIF Production program and other directing/writing programs and grants. Later, I will attend the Power Women’s Summit and attend awesome talks/panels and network my butt off. And finally, when I get home tonight I’ll kiss my boys goodnight.

What do you love most about Your City?

Los Angeles is a myriad of people of all walks of life and backgrounds. Because of this I feel most at home here than in any other place in this world. Being a mixed person I’ve felt awkward and out of place a lot but when I’m in the LA area and I see all the different people and it is extremely comforting to me. I also love that I can grab Korean BBQ and Pazole on the same block.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

My go-to breakfast is toast with eggs, soyrizo and avocado. I don’t do breakfast out.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM - Getting kicked by my children’s cold and clammy feet while in bed. Then we are up by 7am and they are off to school by 7:30am. By 9am I’m ready for work. I’m lucky enough to work from home most of the time.

10:00 AM - As a filmmaker this varies from day to day. Usually I’m knee-deep in editing, writing, producing, applying to workshops and grants, emailing, researching, prepping for a production, etc.

12:00 PM - Favorite Lunch spot/meal?

Right now I’m craving a tempeh bacon sandwich and a chocolate vegan cupcake from Fiore Market Cafe in South Pasadena.  You would think I’m vegan!

7:00 PM - If I’m not networking or at a workshop or panel of some kind, I’m getting my kids ready for bed followed by storytime. Right now my kids are loving Grace Chon’s book Puppystyled and we just laugh at all the cute dogs. It helps us de-stress after a long day.

11:00 PM - Seriously, these days I’m watching Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix.  I call it “research”. If I have a deadline or a production coming up I can be be seen writing, prepping, or editing during this time.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

I drink 1 cup of coffee in the am and then water all day long. Occasionally I’ll have some tequila or white wine with my friends.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

I’m digging these accounts : and @directors_visions

What should everyone try at least once?

Perform or speak in public.

I think it takes so much courage to put yourself out there and have yourself be seen and be heard. I think you can learn a lot about yourself and what matters to you when you are faced with people who might judge you. It doesn’t come natural to all of us but our voices and presence matter just as much as anybody else.

Where do you enjoy getting lost?

I don’t enjoy getting lost … It doesn’t mean I can’t have fun while lost, I’d just prefer not to be.

My Deed of the Day: I met with an aspiring director for coffee and encouraged and supported her the best I could.

My Tip of the Day: Don’t forget to eat so your brain functions properly.
