Arlynn Shimizu: Yoga Teacher

Arlynn Shimizu is a New York City based yoga teacher.  She found her yoga practice while looking to balance the demands of working and living in New York.  A wellness enthusiast with an active lifestyle, she fell in love with the physical, emotional and spiritual benefits yoga provides. With a background spanning martial arts, water and winter sports, Arlynn promotes a holistic relationship with movement in her practice and teaching. Arlynn completed her 200 hour teacher training as well as a 50 hour teaching mentorship under Lindsay Hilscher at Yoga Vida.  She also holds an 85 hour Prenatal Yoga certification from the Prenatal Yoga Center. Her classes are music-driven and accessible to any student level, allowing a welcoming space to connect breath, body and mind.

What do you love most about Your City?

There is something for everyone in New York.  You can always find what you need, if you’re willing to explore.  There are so many hidden gems – parks and water front areas for peace and quiet and then of course when you’re feeling receptive you can find stimulation pretty much everywhere else.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

I love making acai bowls.  My go to is unsweetened acai, nut milk, banana, kale, spirulina, cacao powder, almond butter & Moon Juice Beauty Dust, topped with coconut flakes, berries and a blend of chia, flax & hemp seeds.

My all-time favorite restaurant is Olea in Fort Greene – they have the best Mediterranean food in NYC, hands down.  My other go-tos are Divya’s Kitchen and Café Mogador.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM – I am up and on my way to practice at Brooklyn Yoga Club.

10:00 AM – Teaching group classes at Yoga Vida.

12:00 PM - Favorite Power Lunch spot/meal?

I am a Sweetgreen addict.  I frequent pretty much every location in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn.  On nice days I’ll go to the one in Dumbo and eat my salad outside at Brooklyn Bridge Park.

7:00 PM - I am hopefully winding down at this point.  I have a pretty specific evening routine.  I always lay out my clothes, pack my bag and do some meal prep for the next day.  Once everything is set for the next day I’ll diffuse some calming essential oils, turn on my Himalayan salt lamp and read. I also love using sheet masks a few nights a week in combination with my rose quartz roller, so relaxing.

10:00 PM – I try to be asleep by 10:00 PM most nights since my yoga practice or teaching schedule require me to be up and out the door by 6:00 AM Monday-Friday.  I am a huge sleep advocate and prioritize getting 7-8 hours each night.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

Water!  I like to keep it interesting though and will add mint leaves, lemon, lime or some berries.  If I really want to indulge, I’ll treat myself to a La Croix – coconut is my favorite flavor.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

Fitbit and Zero are my most used apps.  I use my Fitbit app to track my sleep schedule (it tracks how many hours & quality of sleep), the number of steps you’ve taken & I like to input my exercise.

I intermittent fast 6 days per week, so I like using the Zero app to track my fasts.  My fasts are between 16 – 18 hours each day so it’s great to see how much time you have left to fast or if you’ve gone past the goal you’ve set for yourself.

For Instagram some of my favorites are @eddiestern, @leefromamerica, @escapebklyn & @thechalkboardmag

What should everyone try at least once?

Cupping therapy.  It’s so good for inflammation, muscle tension & circulation.  And it feels amazing. It’s like getting a reverse massage!

Where do you enjoy getting lost?

I love being in the Catskills.  I grew up spending weekends there with my family and take any opportunity I have to get back up there to be out in the mountains.
