Soma Helmi: Filmmaker

Born in Bali to an Indonesian father and Polish mother, Soma Helmi grew up somewhere between Indonesia, Australia, and the US. She decided to pursue filmmaking after many years as an Art Director at J. Walter Thompson and freelance photographic producer. Soma is credited as co-director on the ground breaking film ‘Life in a Day’ directed by Academy Award winning Director Kevin Macdonald and produced by Ridley Scott and YouTube. Her short films have now been screened at film festivals around the world including Sundance Film Festival, OUTFEST, Phoenix Comicon, Anchorage Film Festival, WOW Film Festival, and BALINALE Film Festival. Soma has also received recognition for her commercial work for brands such as Unilever, Campbell’s, Chevrolet, Klondike, Nike and Getty Images. Soma currently lives in Los Angeles where she pursue her love of filmmaking and photography.

What do you love most about Your City?

To be honest, I didn’t think I would like LA when I first moved here 2 years ago. I come from Bali and have never really enjoyed living in big cities. Saying all that I was really pleasantly surprised at how much I ended up loving living here. We live far up in the hills, so have incredible views, a small town feel, but when we want to, we can easily go into the city and have that experience. The snow is a couple of hours away and so is the beach. Just about anything is at your fingertips. And of course, there is the vibrant film industry which constantly inspires me to create.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

It’s a bit of a toss up between a perfect plate of eggs Florentine and my husbands pancakes. As for favourite restaurant, I don’t know if I can name just one. LA has incredible food - a plethora of cuisines - some of which I had never experienced. However, if pushed I would have to say Guisado’s (tacos), Sugarfish (sushi), China Red (dim sum) and Wong Java (Javanese) are among my favourites.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM – Waking up. Checking my emails, social media. If I’m working I’d be on set!

10:00 AM - Writing, editing or watching a new show for research.

12:00 PM - Favorite Power Lunch spot/meal?

Home with a cup of Trader Joe’s tomato soup.

7:00 PM - Having dinner with my husband, talking about the day and catching up.

11:00 PM - Fast asleep!

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

Water. More than I sometimes remember to drink.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

I’d say I spend an inordinate amount of time on Facebook. Not so much for personal reasons, but more so for work. I’m part of quite a few filmmaker groups and I constantly scour these for inspiration, news, discussions and every so often job opportunities. I use it for casting, for crewing up and as a marketing tool for my projects.

What should everyone try at least once?

Where do you enjoy getting lost?

Angeles National Forest.
